Shrewsbury Castle
The Story
The castle was founded in 1069 by Roger de Montgomery, one of William the Conqueror's most trusted commanders, on a narrow strip of high ground where the River Severn loop almost closes. The location was not accidental — it guarded the only land approach to the medieval town.
The red sandstone structure that stands today is largely the result of work carried out in the 13th century, with significant alterations made by Thomas Telford in the 1790s when the castle was converted into a private house. It passed into public ownership in the 20th century and now houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum. Free to enter. The views from the castle walls across the river loop are among the best in the town.
Shrewsbury Castle sits at the neck of the town loop, exactly where a defensive castle should be. The red sandstone catches the light differently at every hour of the day. We find it remarkable that it is free to enter.
Enjoy Your Visit
Castle Street runs from the town centre towards the railway station, passing the castle entrance on the left. Five minutes on foot from The Square. The entrance is through the original medieval gatehouse.
The Shropshire Regimental Museum inside the castle covers over 300 years of military history connected to the county. Free to enter with the castle. Allow an hour if you plan to go through it properly — the collection is more substantial than the building suggests.
The walk up to the castle walls is worth doing for the views alone. The full bend of the River Severn loop opens up to the west, with the town spread across it. On a clear day you can see well into Wales.
The railway station is two minutes on foot from the castle entrance, which makes it a useful last stop before a train. Dana Street alongside the castle leads down to the river and the English Bridge in about 10 minutes.
