Lion + Pheasant Hotel
The Story
Wyle Cop has been one of Shrewsbury's most important streets since the medieval period — the main route from the English Bridge into the town centre, lined with timber-framed buildings that have been standing for five centuries. Numbers 49 and 50 began as a coaching inn on this route, with origins dating to the 16th century.
The Lion + Pheasant is privately owned and has been carefully restored rather than renovated — there is a difference. The fourteen bedrooms are individually designed, no two the same, which reflects the irregular nature of the building they occupy. The restaurant draws diners who are not staying. Grade I listed.
The Lion + Pheasant sits on Wyle Cop, one of the finest medieval streets in England. Fourteen rooms, each one different from the last. We rate it as the best place to stay in Shrewsbury.
Enjoy Your Stay
Wyle Cop at seven in the morning is one of the quieter streets in Shrewsbury. Walk down to the English Bridge before the town wakes up — the river from the bridge is one of the best views in town, and it takes less than five minutes from the hotel door.
The Bear Steps are directly up the hill from the hotel, a medieval alley that leads into the heart of the old town without needing to navigate the main streets. Follow them to the market square and St Mary's Church.
Shrewsbury Castle is 10 minutes on foot up Castle Street. The Shropshire Regimental Museum inside is free. The views from the castle walls are the best elevated views of the town loop.
Wyle Cop in the evening has a different character from the daytime. The Lion + Pheasant restaurant is one of the more considered kitchens in Shrewsbury. Stay in the building if you can.
