Premier Inn Shrewsbury Town Centre
The Story
Smithfield Road runs along the inside of the river loop, which means the hotel sits closer to the River Severn than most guests expect before they arrive. The Welsh Bridge is two minutes on foot. The walk along the water to the Quarry Park takes under ten minutes in the other direction.
The hotel itself is modern and straightforward. There are no historic beams or uneven floors. What there is: clean rooms, a reliable breakfast, a car park, and a position at the edge of the old town without the narrow medieval streets that can make arriving by car difficult. That combination is harder to find in central Shrewsbury than it sounds.
We will not pretend a Premier Inn is something it is not. What we will say is that the location on Smithfield Road is genuinely good. Walk out of the front door and the River Severn is directly ahead of you. The town centre is fifteen minutes on foot. For families and business travellers who want the town without paying boutique prices, this does exactly what it promises.
Enjoy Your Stay
Walk out onto Smithfield Road and cross to the river bank. The Welsh Bridge is two minutes to your left. Early morning on the Severn is one of the quieter things Shrewsbury has to offer — the town is still waking up and the water is doing most of the talking.
Follow the river south along the path that runs inside the loop. The Quarry Park is about ten minutes on foot. The formal gardens were designed by Percy Thrower in the 1950s and are free to visit. The river walk back is worth taking slowly.
The Armoury on the Welsh Bridge is a five-minute walk. A Shropshire pub with food, real ales and a riverside setting that earns its reputation. Go before one o'clock and you will get a table without planning ahead.
Head into town on foot via Mardol and Pride Hill. The walk takes about fifteen minutes from the hotel. The old town is compact enough to cover in an afternoon — the market, the Bear Steps, St Mary's and Shrewsbury Castle are all within ten minutes of each other once you arrive.
The town centre has a good spread of pubs and restaurants within comfortable walking distance. For a quieter option, The Alb on Smithfield Road is a few minutes' walk and has the kind of unpretentious atmosphere that a long day of travelling earns.
