The Story
Smithfield Road has been a working street since Shrewsbury was a river trading town, running along the inside of the Severn loop between the Welsh Bridge and the town centre. The building at number 14 is two hundred years old and has been providing beds for much of that time.
The Alb is family-run, which shows in how it operates. It is small and unpretentious. The river is two minutes on foot. The Welsh Bridge is at the end of the road. The town centre is a fifteen-minute walk up Mardol. There is nothing here that overpromises, and it delivers what it says it will.
Small family-run hotels on working streets like this one could easily disappear. The Alb has not. The building is two centuries old and the people who run it clearly care about it. We think that counts for something.
Enjoy Your Stay
Cross Smithfield Road and walk down to the river bank before breakfast. The Welsh Bridge is at the end of the road and the Severn at this hour is one of the quieter things in Shrewsbury. Worth doing before the town wakes up.
Walk south along the river path inside the loop. The Quarry Park is ten minutes away on foot. Percy Thrower designed the formal gardens in the 1950s and they are free to visit year round. The riverside path back is more interesting than the road.
The Armoury on the Welsh Bridge is five minutes from the hotel. Locally sourced food, real ales and a riverside setting that draws people who are not staying in the area. Go before one o'clock.
Walk into town up Mardol. It takes fifteen minutes and deposits you at the edge of the old town. The market, the Bear Steps, St Mary's Church and Shrewsbury Castle are all within a short walk of each other from there.
Smithfield Road is well placed for getting back on foot from wherever the evening takes you. The hotel's position between the river and the town means you are rarely more than fifteen minutes from either.
