The Lion Hotel
The Story
For more than four centuries, coaches arriving from London would stop at Wyle Cop before crossing into Wales. The Lion Hotel has been here for all of it, sitting at the top of one of Shrewsbury's steepest streets since 1610.
The building is Grade I listed. The exposed beams, the uneven floors and the narrow corridors are not a design choice. They are what a building looks like after four hundred years of continuous use. Fifty-nine bedrooms, a brasserie restaurant and a bar that feels genuinely historic rather than deliberately rustic.
The Lion Hotel has stood on Wyle Cop since 1610. The floors are uneven, the corridors are narrow and the beams are real. We would not have it any other way.
Enjoy Your Stay
Walk down Wyle Cop to the English Bridge before the town wakes up. The River Severn at this hour is one of Shrewsbury's finest views. Two minutes from the hotel door.
The Bear Steps, a medieval alley just around the corner, leads into the heart of the old town without needing a map. Follow it to the market square and St Mary's Church.
The Armoury on the Welsh Bridge is a 10-minute walk along the river. Locally sourced food, real ales and one of the best riverside settings in Shropshire.
Shrewsbury Castle is 15 minutes on foot from the hotel. The Shropshire Regimental Museum inside is free. The views from the castle walls over the town are worth the climb.
The Lion Hotel bar is open to non-guests. Warm, historic and exactly what a bar in a 400-year-old coaching inn should feel like.
