The Story
Victoria Quay sits at the bend of the River Severn loop, where commercial boats once unloaded goods heading into the town. The building that houses The Armoury was a Victorian warehouse before Brunning and Price converted it into one of their most celebrated pubs.
Brunning and Price are known for taking buildings with genuine character and leaving most of that character intact. The Armoury is their best example. The mismatched furniture, the walls covered in framed prints and accumulated curiosities, the long bar with its range of cask ales — none of it feels designed. It feels collected, over time, by people who care about the building they are in.
The Armoury is the pub we take people to when we want to show them what Shrewsbury is about. A Victorian warehouse on the river, packed with mismatched furniture and curiosities that have been accumulating for decades. We have never once left disappointed.
Enjoy Your Visit
Walk along the river from the town centre to Victoria Quay — it takes less than 10 minutes from the English Bridge. The view across the Severn on the approach is one of the best in Shrewsbury.
Arrive before noon if you want a riverside table. The Armoury gets busy at lunch and the tables closest to the water go first. The menu changes seasonally but the standard rarely drops.
The Sabrina boat departs from Victoria Quay right outside the pub. The 40-minute circular cruise along the river costs from £6 and shows a completely different side of the town. Worth doing before or after lunch.
The Quarry Park is five minutes on foot along the river path. Percy Thrower designed the formal gardens in the 1950s and they are free to visit year round. A good way to walk off lunch before heading back into town.
The Armoury in the evening is a different pub from the daytime one. The range of cask ales on the bar changes regularly — ask the staff what is new. Quieter on weekdays, livelier at the weekend.
