The Loggerheads
The Story
Church Street runs between the market square and St Alkmund's church, which has been at this end of town since the 8th century. The Loggerheads has occupied the corner for long enough that the two feel inseparable — the kind of pub that seems to have grown out of the street rather than been built on it.
It is a traditional pub in the most straightforward sense: real ales, a loyal local following and a building with more character than most pubs manage in a lifetime. Grade II listed. Unpretentious. Exactly what a pub in the middle of a medieval town should be.
The Loggerheads is the kind of pub that makes you realise how few pubs there are like it. Church Street is one of Shrewsbury's oldest thoroughfares, and the pub fits the street perfectly. We have never walked past it and wished we were somewhere else.
Enjoy Your Visit
Church Street is a two-minute walk from The Square. Head past St Mary's Church and turn right at the junction — the Loggerheads is on the corner where Church Street meets the lane beside St Alkmund's.
The Loggerheads takes its cask ales seriously. The range changes regularly and the quality is consistent. Worth asking what is on before you order — the staff know their beer.
St Alkmund's Church is directly beside the pub, one of the lesser-visited historic churches in Shrewsbury. The Bear Steps, a medieval alley a minute away, lead down towards the river and the Quarry Park.
The Loggerheads is quieter on weekday evenings and livelier at weekends. No music, which makes it one of the better places in the town centre for an actual conversation. Go earlier rather than later if you want a seat.
